Hospital Bag - What's Missing?

Writer: Hannah OtsukaHannah Otsuka

We ended up going to the hospital for an induction, though I did not end up being induced. I did end up having a scheduled day to go to the hospital, but we knew that it wouldn't end up being baby girl's birthday.

When we were planning what to pack, we decided that my husband and I would share a bag, and then put all of the baby items we were bringing in the diaper bag we received as a gift. Since we were having an induction and knew we would be at the hospital for a few days, we also packed an additional backpack with snacks and beverages.

For Mom:

  • Phone charger

  • Airpods Pro - I have used mine every single day since my "induction," even after we left the hospital.

  • 2x Pumping/Nursing Bras, since I knew I didn't want to just be hanging out. I bought this one before we went.

  • 2 pairs of socks

  • Loose sweatpants - I brought these. They were great to go home in.

  • 2x maternity shirts - I love these. They're really soft and stretchy.

  • 8x Nursing Nipple/Breast Pads - I love these. They are contoured so they fit in the bra without making my boobs look like a lumpy mess.

  • Crocs. I never wore them before but they were great around the hospital room so I didn't have to wear warm socks (I run hot). I got these ones from Amazon.

  • Silverettes - These ones are great. They are offered in two sizes and come with a little pouch to store them in. Wouldn't have survived my first few days breastfeeding without them!

  • Angled peri bottle

  • Colostrum - Frozen, labeled with my name and birthdate and the date it was collected, in a cooler bag.

For Dad:

  • Sweatpants

  • Slippers/Slide-on shoes

  • Going home pants

  • 3-4 shirts

  • Deodorant

  • Phone charger

  • Portable charging brick

For Baby:

  • 3 Onesies/outfits for visitors at the hospital (she stayed in the hospital onesie most of the time because there's a LOT of spit up and mucus those first few days)

  • 1 Going Home outfit

  • Pacifier

  • Toiletry kit with nail clippers & nail files

  • Announcement plaque, vinyl numbers, and transfer tape. (Etsy)

  • Announcement blanket, hat & bow

Things we wish we brought (and will bring next time):

  • Breast pumps - The hospital provided a Medela hand/manual pump upon request, as well as the Medela Symphony. Personally I think Medela products are overrated, and I will bring my own next time.

  • Nursing shirts for mom, for when visitors came

  • Pumping Spray - The Legendairy Milk one is the best!
